German wheat beer (Weizenbeir) is well known throughout the southern part of Germany and was born about 500 years ago. It's a light bubbly type of beer that is especially good on a hot day. Originally, these steins were made for drinking wheat beer because wheat beer tends to foam more. Using a taller stein would allow the beer to ariate and settle easier.

This wheat stein displays the Austrian emblem with flags on either side.
